SHORT ANSWER

A genuine part normally carries the vehicle maker’s part number and comes through its distribution chain. OEM refers to an original-equipment manufacturer, but the term is used loosely in retail. An OEM-style retrofit may be excellent without being factory-fitted original equipment.

01

Terms that are often mixed up

OE or genuine parts are usually sold under the vehicle brand and its part number. An OEM supplies components for first assembly and may also sell products into the independent market.

Aftermarket covers parts outside the vehicle maker’s distribution network. It includes strong branded products and basic universal kits. ‘Original quality’ alone does not prove identical life or compatibility.

02

What makes a retrofit factory-like

A sound retrofit uses appropriate mounts, wiring routes, fuses, connectors and control-unit communication. The function appears in the intended vehicle interface and remains diagnosable.

Genuine parts alone do not guarantee this. Poor wiring, missing calibration or incorrect parameterisation can leave an expensive project incomplete.

03

Part numbers and vehicle configuration

Build date, equipment variant, part-number index and software level can all matter. A camera may fit mechanically but fail to communicate with the existing infotainment or gateway.

A feasibility check before ordering avoids hidden requirements for control units, looms or licences.

04

Approval, calibration and records

Safety-relevant or approval-sensitive retrofits may need inspection. Cameras, radar and lighting systems may also require calibration.

A useful record lists parts, software changes, fuse positions and reversibility for future diagnosis, repair or sale.

What to check
  • ✓verify part number and vehicle compatibility
  • ✓distinguish genuine, OEM-supplier and aftermarket parts
  • ✓plan wiring, fusing and diagnostics
  • ✓include coding and calibration
  • ✓retain parts and change records
Conclusion

OEM is not a quality seal for the whole project. Quality comes from the right component, installation, commissioning and documentation working together.
